Half Day Ollantaytambo and Museum Alqa. We will start this adventure heading to the Ollantaytambo ruins. Here you’ll explore a truly impressive archaeological complex, one of the largest in Peru, which is strategically located on top of a mountain and once guarded the road to Machu Picchu. Afterward, we’ll walk down into the town itself. Ollantaytambo, built by the Inca Pachacuti, is exceptional for having maintained the original Inca-designed area as part of its present-day urban layout, with original buildings and narrow stone streets. It’s an intriguing place. After spending time exploring this example of living Inca architecture, we will visit the Casa Museo ALQA, where we will immerse ourselves in a fascinating journey through traditional Andean art. The tour of this beautiful place has been meticulously designed by its founders, Johana Sarmiento and Antonio Sorrentino, who will provide us with an exceptional experience. We will have the opportunity to interact with the pieces on display, explore the space, and establish direct contact with the hosts. The beauty of this experience lies in the fact that we will not be mere spectators, but rather an integral part of the experience, allowing us to engage in spontaneous dialogues in a familiar and welcoming environment, as if we were in our own home. Additionally, this place hosts a traditional and innovative restaurant where we will enjoy a delicious lunch prepared with carefully selected ingredients. While savouring this culinary experience, we can appreciate the charming surroundings that characterise this traditional house in Ollantaytambo. From the top of Warmiwañusca, we will have such a spectacular view of the Vilcabamba and Vilcanota mountain ranges that it will take our breath away. We will descend to Llulluchapata for lunch and continue descending to Pacaymayo (3600 masl). The camp will be waiting for us to rest after overcoming the most challenging day of the route. Day 8 - INCA TRAIL TO MACHU PICCHU
Today's route will give us fascinating archaeological sites that can only be accessed through the Inca Trail, in an enviable state of preservation, and that we will be lucky to explore in preparation for our early arrival to Machu Picchu. But first, we will make the last effort to ascend to Runcuracay pass (4000 m.a.s.l.) to enjoy a beautiful view of the surrounding mountain range again. The descent begins, and the first place we will come across is Sayaqmarca, which functions as an urban center right on a cliff. We will continue walking and pass through the Conchamarca complex between spiral staircases and tunnels, a sample of Inca construction skills. Lunch awaits us at Phuyupatamarca, one of the most impressive archaeological sites, surrounded by terraces at the top of the mountain. We will continue our journey to Wiñaywayna, but not before visiting Intipata and its formidable terraces. We will camp in Wiñaywayna (2800 masl), an ancient agricultural site a few kilometers from Machu Picchu. Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner
Day 9 - INCA TRAIL TO MACHU PICCHU
Our last day on the Inca Trail will start very early. We will head back into the cloud forest through a beautiful cobblestone road, built with so much detail that there is no doubt that it leads to a special place. Among trees and birdsong, we will climb the Inca Trail's last steps to the impressive Inti Punku of Machu Picchu (2745 masl), the gateway to the citadel that welcomes us with a beautiful view of the llaqta in the distance. Congratulations, we made it! We will have time to rest and take pictures before we continue our way to the sanctuary and have the guided tour accompanied by our guide, who will explain the history, organization, importance, and all the mysteries Machu Picchu holds. Finally, we will return by bus to Agua Calientes or Machu Picchu Pueblo to wait for the departure of our train back to Ollantaytambo. Overnight at El Mapi Hotel Machu Picchu by Inkaterra. The destinations and trek were sensational and the mountain scenery is bigger and better than you could ever imagine from pictures. Utilising indigenous guides and porters and listening to their stories of the land made the experience even more emotional and increased my feeling of connection to the land. The city components of the tours were also informative but gave enough free time to explore. The only downside was in the end the exposure to Peru and South America left me wanting to see more. It’s a fabulous continent and I want to go back.
- Caryn
The Inca Trail isn’t just about reaching Machu Picchu—it’s the journey itself that makes it unforgettable. Along the way, I got to know the incredible guides and porters, and learned so much about the Inca civilization. By the time I arrived at Machu Picchu, I had a much deeper appreciation for its history and significance. It truly enhanced the entire experience.
- Kevin
Going to Peru with someone who had lived in South America for an extended period of time just added another dimension to the whole trip. Phil even spoke the local Cusco dialect which surprised many locals.
The itinerary maximised the available time and the guides for the Machu Pichu trail were wonderful, providing a lot of much needed motivation for someone that should have been a bit fitter. Cheryle and Phil were constantly checking in with us to make sure our rooms and services were comfortable and that we were feeling ok from the effects of the high altitude. They were very attentive hosts during the whole trip and I would highly recommend them and look forward to a new itinerary for my next trip!
